US senator: Apple, Google app stores should ban TikTok
United States Senator from Colorado Michael Bennet urged on Thursday Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google to remove ByteDance Ltd.'s TikTok from their application stores, Google Play and App Store.
In the letter he sent to the tech giants and then shared with the media, Bennet warned that TikTok could provide the Chinese government with the US users' data and even promote Beijing's political interests on the platform. He described TikTok as "a unique concern" that carries a risk that is "obvious" and "unacceptable."
Earlier this week, Senate Intelligence Committee (SSCI) Chairman Mark Warner announced his plan to propose a probe into foreign technology services and their practises in the US that could represent a risk to national security. Previously, it was reported that TikTok Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shou Zi Chew will testify before Congress in March.
