US sends destroyer to Persian Gulf after attacks on tankers

The United States has sent guided-missile destroyer USS Mason to the Persian Gulf after Washington accused Iran of attacking tankers there but stated it has "no interest" in engaging in a new conflict in the Middle East. The USS Mason will join the destroyer USS Bainbridge just outside the Persian Gulf, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said and warned that "no interference with USS Bainbridge, or its mission, will be tolerated."

CENTCOM called the attacks on tankers "a clear threat to international freedom of navigation and freedom of commerce" but added that the US has no plans to engage in a war with Iran. "We will defend our interests, but a war with Iran is not in our strategic interest, nor in the best interest of the international community,” CENTCOM said.
