US should not be criminal refuge - China

China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin (pictured) underlined on Thursday that the United States should not provide a shelter for "criminals" and that it should respect international treaties, such as the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.

The official made the remarks in light of yesterday's arrest of five Chinese nationals in the US over "acting as agents" for the government in Beijing in connection to China's anti-corruption "Operation Fox Hunt." Washington chose to dismiss the "fundamental facts and deliberately smeared" the "anti-corruption campaign," Wang said.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) noted yesterday that the goal of the alleged perpetrators was to bring Chinese citizens, mostly "dissidents, critics" and "opponents" to China's President Xi Jinping, back to their home country.
