US targets Iranian supreme leader with sanctions

The United States unveiled on Monday a new set of sanctions against Iran amid heightened tensions between the two countries. US President Donald Trump stated the latest "hard-hitting" sanctions will target Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as eight senior commanders in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and represent a response to Tehran downing a US drone.

"We do not seek conflict with Iran or any other country," Trump told reporters at the White House. "I can only tell you we cannot ever let Iran have a nuclear weapon," he insisted. The US president added he will sign the executive order on the new measures shortly.

The new embargo was first announced by US President Donald Trump and comes after two incidents in the Middle East over the past couple of weeks. The US first accused Iran of being responsible for the attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, which Tehran categorically denied. Several days later, Iran said it shot down a US drone which entered its airspace. The US confirmed its unmanned aircraft was shot down but insisted it had not entered Iranian territory.
