US tells AMLO it will challenge Mexico corn ban

United States Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack (pictured) in a statement said he warned Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that Washington plans to take legal action against Mexico in case the country goes ahead with its ban on biotech corn.

Vilsack said he told the Mexican leader that "absent acceptable resolution of the issue" will prompt the US government to "consider all options," including taking "formal steps" to enforce its legal rights under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Vilsack argued that the "phase-out decree" which is set to ban genetically modified products by 2024 has the potential to "substantially disrupt trade," calling the issue "critically important."

"We expect to have a proposal from the President's team soon and we will evaluate closely," Vilsack concluded.
