US threatens with new sanctions against Nord Stream - report

The United States is considering ramping up pressure on Nord Stream 2 if Russia completes the construction of the pipeline in the Baltic Sea, diplomatic sources from Washington told Handelsblatt on Tuesday. The House of Representatives and the Senate are reportedly prepared to pass another bill that would enable the United States President Donald Trump's administration to impose another batch of sanctions against the pipeline that aims to deliver Russian gas to Europe.

Previously, the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in Denmark was stopped as Swiss-based company Allseas halted its work south of Bornholm last year. The move came after Washington's warning that the company may face "overwhelming legal and economic sanctions that could threaten its existence" if it continues building the pipeline.

Meanwhile, Russia asserted that Allseas' decision was made under the rising pressure of "illegal US sanctions," adding that the company's withdrawing from the project won't "obstruct" Kremlin's intention to finish the pipeline.
