US to go after Russian banks if crisis escalates - report

The United States will hit key Russian state-owned banks and companies and its foreign trade with punitive measures if Moscow decides to invade Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing anonymous White House officials.

Specifically, Washington will look to sanction VTB Bank, Gazprombank and Sberbank and insurance and energy-shipping companies with Kremlin links, prohibit trading in new Russian debt and introduce restrictions on exports to Russia, including the semiconductor sector trade, according to the sources.

On the other hand, US action against Moscow's energy exports or its SWIFT membership is not reportedly being considered at the moment.
