US to hit EU with steel, aluminum tariffs - report

United States is set to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum from the European Union before the June 1 deadline, Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The Trump administration is reportedly expected to make the announcement on Thursday.

In March, US President Donald Trump suspended tariffs on steel and aluminum imports until May 1 for Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, South Korea and member countries of the European Union. On May 1, it was reported that the president postponed the decision about steel and aluminum tariffs on the EU, Canada and Mexico to June 1.

Earlier on Wednesday, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire warned the US that the EU will be ready to respond in case Washington decides to impose tariffs on metal imports from the bloc.
