US to invest $3.2B in antiviral pills for COVID

The United States Department of Health and Human Services is expected to invest $3.2 billion in the development of antiviral COVID-19 treatment, the New York Times reported on Thursday.

According to the paper, the new investment is meant to bridge the gap in the research into the virus that was made by Operation Warp Speed, which focused more on the development of vaccines rather than a treatment for coronavirus. Furthermore, the money is planned to help the acceleration of clinical trials into promising candidates, as well as fund the research into new ones.

Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci supported the initiative, saying that he wants people to be able to pick up an antiviral pill as soon as they are diagnosed with coronavirus.
