US trade deficit up to $68.2B in January

The United States international goods and services trade deficit amounted to $68.2 billion in January, increasing by $1.2 billion from December's revised figure of $67 billion, the US Census Bureau said in a report published on Friday.

The country's exports rose by $1.8 billion on a monthly basis to reach a total of $191.9 billion in January, while imports were at $260.2 billion, jumping by $3.1 billion from the previous month. The goods trade deficit increased by $1.3 billion to $85.4 billion in the first month of 2021, while the services trade surplus went up by $0.1 billion to $17.2 billion.

On an annual basis, the US goods and services deficit surged $23.8 billion or 53.7% with exports dropping $15.7 billion (7.6%) and imports growing $8.1 billion (3.2%).
