US transport disruptions to remain alongside pandemic - Buttigieg

United States Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told reporters on Wednesday that he expects the bottlenecks and "shocks" in the transportation system to last as long as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, however, the government is taking steps to shorten the waiting timeline.

"Remember there are three factors here: it's about supply, it's about demand and it's about the pandemic. And those three factors are interacting," Buttigieg said in an interview to CNN, stressing that the bottlenecks occurred due to higher than normal volumes of cargo caused by increased consumer demand.

Buttigieg also noted that part of the problem is the underinvestment that the transportation system has been experiencing over the past years, pointing at the current administration's infrastructure bill, passing of which allegedly will help the industry.
