US Treasury Dept sanctions N. Korean hackers

The United States Treasury Department sanctioned three North Korean "malicious cyber groups" for carrying out attacks against critical infrastructure, it announced on Friday.

The department said that the three groups, which it identified as Lazarus Group, Bluenoroff and Andariel, were backed by the North Korean state and responsible for the Communist state's "malicious cyber activity" on critical infrastructure. In particular, it blamed them for the "WannaCry" ransomware attack in December 2017, which affected 150 countries worldwide and was the largest such attack in history. It also said that the groups were affiliated with North Korea's intelligence unit, the Reconnaissance General Bureau.

"Treasury is taking action against North Korean hacking groups that have been perpetrating cyber attacks to support illicit weapon and missile programs," said Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Sigal Mandelker. "We will continue to enforce existing U.S. and UN sanctions against North Korea and work with the international community to improve cybersecurity of financial networks," she added.
