US, UK designate Russia-backed cyber perpetrators

The United States Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced on Thursday the sanctions it introduced jointly with the United Kingdom on two people linked to an advanced persistent threat (APT) hacker group allegedly supported by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB).

According to the document, the FSB has used different hacker groups to conduct spear phishing on individuals and entities in the US and the UK in an effort to breach government networks and obtain information.

"As we have stressed through our bilateral actions over the past year, the United States and the United Kingdom stand together, steadfast against the Kremlin and its state-sponsored malicious cyber groups' efforts to target our democracies," Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Under Secretary Brian E. Nelson said in the Treasury's statement.
