US-UK trade deal unlikely if Good Friday agreement fails - Pelosi

United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stressed on Friday the importance of the Good Friday Agreement between the United Kingdom and Ireland, including the "free and open border" between Northern Ireland and Ireland. Pelosi expressed satisfaction the UK and the European Union have prolonged negotiations on the border checks between the UK and Ireland, stating that "they have to reach an agreement."

"This is not a threat, it's a prediction - if there is the destruction of the Good Friday accords, we are very unlikely to have a UK-US bilateral [agreement]," Pelosi said during a visit to the UK. However, she hoped a solution to the Northern Ireland Protocol will be found, stressing that the Irish government is "very sympathetic" to resolving the issue.
