US urges Tunisia to outline return to democracy

United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan spoke with Tunisian President Kais Saied and called for the North African country's leaders to "outline a swift return to Tunisia's democratic path."

"National Security Advisor Sullivan underscored that this will require rapidly forming a new government, led by a capable prime minister to stabilize Tunisia's economy and confront the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as ensuring the timely return to the elected parliament," National Security Council spokesperson Emily Horne said in a statement.

In July, Saied sacked Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi and suspended the parliament amid protests over the government's economic policies and handling of the coronavirus crisis. Meanwhile, clashes erupted between Saied's supporters and lawmakers from the Islamist party Ennahdha, which holds the majority in parliament.
