US Venezuela envoy: Maduro will succumb to pressure

United States Special Envoy on Venezuela Elliott Abrams (pictured) said on Wednesday that the regime in Caracas will eventually be toppled by international pressure and a "storm" that's brewing within the government. He also called on the security forces in Venezuela to join the rebellion against the left-wing president.

President-elect Nicolas Maduro "will not be able to weather it much longer," he stated during his testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The diplomat went on to say that US sanctions against the oil-rich country are expected to halve its crude production by the end of 2019.

Abrams served as Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs in the early 1980s and later as Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs, during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. He's been accused of backing Guatemalan dictator Efrain Rios Montt and the right-wing guerilla Contras in Nicaragua while in the Reagan administration, and downplaying the crimes of El Salvador's right-wing government committed during the civil war that took place in the 1980s.
