Vaccination pace too slow to deal with pandemic - Borrell

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated in a blog post on Thursday that the global tempo of COVID-19 vaccination is "far too slow to deal effectively with the pandemic worldwide," warning that, "at the current pace, the whole world will not be vaccinated before 2023." Speaking to his counterparts at the G7 summit, he pointed out the risk of new variants undermining the efficiency of the available shots and the possibility that the coronavirus "could become chronic, weakening the economic recovery."

Borrell detailed other discussions at the summit, including the group's shared goal to "build a post COVID-19 global multilateral framework based on democratic values and fundamental rights." He added that the G7 does not want "a world permanently divided into rivaling blocs. A global community is needed to solve global problems, such as the COVID-19 pandemic (and other potential future pandemics), climate change, biodiversity loss or nuclear proliferation."
