Vaccine competition must be avoided - EU's Michel

Competition between nations on a coronavirus vaccine needs to be avoided as it would not benefit citizens of any country, European Council President Charles Michel said on Tuesday.

Commenting on the upcoming G7 summit, Michel noted that a vaccine will need to be shared by all and that the G7 should commit to such an arrangement. Additionally, he pointed out that the G7 needs to express unity and a common strategy to fight the negative economic impact of the coronavirus. Michel also stressed that World Trade Organization reform needs to be discussed among the group, especially as the EU believes any reform needs to take climate change into account.

Earlier, United States President Donald Trump said he wants to have this summer's G7 Leaders' Summit take place in the White House and mark the first time world leaders gather since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
