Verhofstadt: Cross-party deal only way to avoid no-deal Brexit

European Parliament representative in Brexit negotiations Guy Verhofstadt called on the political parties in the United Kingdom to come together next week and find a joint "way forward" in order to avoid a no-deal Brexit. He also reiterated that the European Union is willing to make changes to the political declaration on its future relationship with the UK in case British lawmakers reach a cross-party solution.

"The only way to avoid a no deal now is for MPs to finally act next week & define a cross-party way forward. If they do, we are ready to change the Political Declaration," Verhofsadt said in a tweet after UK lawmakers rejected Prime Minister Theresa May's deal for the third time earlier in the day.

Earlier, European Council President Donald Tusk called an emergency EU summit for April 10 to discuss Britain's exit from the bloc and try to avoid a disorderly Brexit, while the European Commission warned that the result of today's vote means a no-deal Brexit is now a "likely scenario."
