Volkswagen deliveries fall 3.6% in May

Volkswagen Group said on Friday that its deliveries in May stood at 918,000 units, falling 3.6% compared to the same month a year ago. Asia-Pacific deliveries plunged 9.4%, but the global decline was somewhat offset by an increase in deliveries in the Americas. North America deliveries jumped 4.3% year on year in May and deliveries in South America surged 5.8%. Meanwhile, Europe deliveries were virtually unchanged compared to May 2018 and amounted to 415,700 vehicles.

"Positive impetus came from North and South America, but this was insufficient to compensate for the continuing weakness of the overall market in our largest single market, China. It is gratifying to note that we once again significantly increased our market share in China," Christian Dahlheim, head of Volkswagen Group Sales, said.

The German carmaker added that its Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi and Skoda brands posted drops in deliveries in May, while deliveries of the Porsche and SEAT brands surged 13.3% and 10.5%, respectively. Truck and bus brands MAN and Scania recorded the largest jump in deliveries, both skyrocketing 20.8% year on year.
