Wall Street shrugs off Omicron fears to close higher

Major stock markets in the United States closed higher on Tuesday, as investors looked at the rhetoric surrounding the Omicron variant. US President Joe Biden urged people to get vaccinated, saying that those that are can "comfortably head into the Christmas holidays," despite recent surges in coronavirus cases in the country.

Meanwhile, the federal administration also announced it will be providing 500 million at-home tests for people to use as it tries to prevent the further spread of the virus.

The Dow Jones ended the day 1.61% or 561 points higher, led by Nike jumping 6.15%. The Nasdaq 100 was up by 2.29% at the closing bell, with Atlassian surging 10.86%. The S&P 500 finished the session with an increase of 1.78%, as Citrix Systems gained 13.63%.

The euro stood flat against the dollar changing hands for $1.12813 at 4:01 am ET.
