WH official: Booster shots to be free until 2022

White House COVID-19 advisor David Kessler said on Tuesday that if vaccine booster shots are necessary to control the pandemic and the spread of virus variants, they are guaranteed to be free to the public up until 2022.

"We do have the funds to purchase the next round and to assure if there are boosters that they are free just as the last round. Beyond 2022, I look to your guidance for at what point do you transition back to a commercial market, but I think for this coming round we are going to proceed as we have proceeded," Kessler told the Congress lawmakers.

According to Kessler, an unchanged third shot of the existing coronavirus vaccines is the "simplest and safest assumption" of what a booster shot could be. The US official also urged pharmaceutical companies to speed up the development of an oral antiviral drug, necessary for those who can't or won't get vaccinated.
