WH official reiterates opposition to gas tax hike

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates made a statement on Friday reiterating that US President Joe Biden's administration continues to oppose the proposal to raise the gas tax in efforts to finance the American Jobs infrastructure bill.

"The President has been clear throughout these negotiations: he is adamantly opposed to raising taxes on people making less than $400,000 a year. After the extraordinarily hard times that ordinary Americans endured in 2020 — job losses, shrinking incomes, squeezed budgets — he is simply not going to allow Congress to raise taxes on those who suffered the most," Bates said.

The proposal of an infrastructure deal has already gained bipartisan support, but the means to fund the bill remain a key point of disagreement among lawmakers. White House has already rejected using sources such as gas taxes, fees on electric vehicles and re-purposing unspent COVID-19 relief funds.
