WH: Russia bears responsibility for dam destruction
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre underscored on Wednesday that Moscow "bears" responsibility for the destruction of the Kakhovka dam because it was under its control.
"Russia has no business to be there in the first place," Jean-Pierre stressed during the regular press briefing session. "The damage and the devastation that we're seeing is heartbreaking. We will do everything that we can to help the people of Ukraine," she added.
Previously, White House National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby stated that there is insufficient evidence to indicate that Moscow was behind the dam attack in Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, however, accused Russia of deliberately blowing up the dam to obstruct Kiev's counteroffensive.
