WH to task commercial planes for Afghan evac - report

The White House is reportedly thinking of enlisting major United States airlines to help with the Afghanistan evacuation efforts, according to a report published by the Wall Street Journal.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the Biden administration plans to activate the Civil Reserve Air Fleet in order to task five airlines with providing up to 20 commercial planes for the transport of Afghan refugees from bases in the region.

The planes are not expected to fly in nor out of Kabul, but would rather transport those refugees from US bases in Qatar, Bahrain, and Germany. At the same time, the US is expected to expand the number of army bases that will be used to house Afghan evacuees.
