WH tried to block former Ukraine envoy's testimony

In a joint statement issued on Friday, Chairmen of the three House committees conducting the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump said that the White House, acting through the State Department, tried to prevent former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch from testifying in Congress, prompting them to issue a subpoena for her appearance.

"This is the latest example of the Administration’s efforts to conceal the facts from the American people and obstruct our lawful and constitutionally-authorized impeachment inquiry," the chairs wrote in the statement.

Yovanovitch, who is testifying behind closed doors, in her opening statement that Trump pressured the Department of State to oust her, despite her superiors' belief that she had "done nothing wrong." She went on to say that the administration was waging "a concerted campaign" against her on the basis of "false claims by people with clearly questionable motives."
