Whistleblower calls for full access to Facebook data

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen said on Monday that legislators need to gain full access to the company's proprietary data "for research not directed by Facebook." She added that "trade secrets should not be an excuse to restrict access to data."

Speaking before the European Parliament, Haugen stated new legislation, such as the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA), "must not be limited to illegal content but must also include content that violates the platform's terms and conditions." The DSA should also "force platforms to take responsibility for the risks beyond the spread of illegal content, such as the manipulation of elections, the explosive spread of disinformation and harms of teenage mental health," Haugen stressed.
