WHO against jab deals that could imperil COVAX

World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe, Dr. Hans Kluge (pictured), stated on Thursday he wanted to avoid having any bilateral deals over vaccines against COVID-19 that might "cause a setback" to COVAX, the program of the global distribution of jabs.

Kluge stressed Europe had been seeing a rise in infections from coronavirus for the first time in six weeks and urged the public to continue respecting the governments' restrictions. "Over a year into the pandemic, our health systems should not be in this situation," he said.

His comments come after Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz warned Vienna would no longer rely strictly on the European Union and COVAX when it came to acquiring vaccines as the rollout was too slow. He also said Austria was ready to produce jabs developed by Russian and Chinese manufacturers.
