WHO chief warns unequal vaccine rollout will delay recovery

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday that a "me-first" approach to coronavirus vaccination "is self-defeating and will lead to a protracted recovery, with trade and travel continuing to suffer." In an opinion piece for the Guardian, he argued that "as long as the virus is spreading anywhere, it has more opportunities to mutate and potentially undermine the efficacy of vaccines everywhere."

Tedros appealed to countries to commit to boosting vaccine manufacturing by means of dose sharing, tech transfer, voluntary licensing or waiving intellectual property rights. He pointed out that production facilities of pharma companies that have not been able to produce a successful vaccine candidate "could be repurposed for those vaccines that have been proven to work." The WHO head also called on corporations and individuals to donate to the Covax program as "the fastest way to speed up the effort to end the pandemic and get humans moving again."
