WHO to discuss COVID variant detected in S. Africa
The World Health Organization (WHO) scheduled a special meeting for Friday to discuss the new COVID-19 variant detected in South Africa.
"We don’t know very much about this yet. What we do know is that this variant has a large number of mutations. And the concern is that when you have so many mutations, it can have an impact on how the virus behaves," WHO's COVID-19 Technical Lead Maria van Kerkhove stated.
Earlier in the day, South African scientists said they detected a new variant of the coronavirus with a large number of mutations and claimed it was responsible for a surge in infections in the country.
