Yoshihide Suga to join race for Japan's new PM - report

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga is about to join the race to succeed Shinzo Abe as the country's new prime minister, Kyodo News reported on Sunday citing internal sources.

However, Suga had denied interest in the position multiple times in the past days. If elected, Suga's government would likely continue Abe's fiscal and monetary policy, providing more stimulus for the economy.

The same outlet previously revealed the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan will hold leadership elections mid-September due to Abe's resignation. Abe confirmed his departure citing health problems that would prevent him from properly doing his job.
