Zarif: US must quit bullying or world will unite against it

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif slammed United States President Donald Trump on Saturday for imposing sanctions on Turkey and doubling steel and aluminum tariffs, which rattled the Turkish lira, sending it to its record low against the dollar.

"Trump's jubilation in inflicting economic hardship on its NATO ally Turkey is shameful. The US has to rehabilitate its addiction to sanctions & bullying or entire world will unite -- beyond verbal condemnations -- to force it to," he tweeted. Zarif added Iran will stand by its "neighbor."

On Friday, President Trump announced he authorized a doubling of the tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel to 20% and 50%, respectively. The move comes after weeks of tension between Turkey and the US surrounding Ankara's detainment of an American pastor.
