SPD approves Martin Schulz as chancellor candidate
Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) voted on Sunday in favor of Martin Schulz (pictured, center) becoming the party’s candidate for chancellor. Schulz won a whopping 605 out of 608 votes at the party’s congress in Berlin.
The former President of the European Parliament will challenge current chancellor Angela Merkel in the September federal election. The latest election polls show the center-left SPD and Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in a tight race.
