EU, UK agree in principle on N. Ireland protocol

The European Union and the United Kingdom reached an agreement in principle on the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement, including the Northern Ireland protocol, European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic (pictured) and UK Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Michael Gove announced on Tuesday.

"Ensuring that the Withdrawal Agreement, in particular the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland, is fully operational at the end of the transition period, i.e. as of 1 January 2021, is essential," the two officials said in a joint statement. As a result of the agreement, the UK will withdraw three clauses of its Internal Market Bill and will not introduce any similar provisions in the Taxation Bill.

Meanwhile, the EU and the UK are still negotiating a post-Brexit trade deal.
