EU proposes stricter travel coronavirus measures

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Monday that the EU is proposing further travel measures in light of the spread of new coronavirus variants, which seem to be more contagious. She conceded that the new measures will be "difficult but necessary" and said the EU should "keep safe and discourage non-essential travel."

Von der Leyen stated stricter measures will be applied to travellers from higher risk areas, including testing, quarantines and a future common European Passenger Locator Form for those entering the EU. However, she stressed that "we need to avoid border closures and keep the Single Market flowing," pointing out that access to essential goods, such as food or medicine, is needed "now more than ever."
