Euro area retail trade volume grew by 17.8% in May

The seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade in the Eurozone grew by 17.8% in May, the statistical office of the European Union Eurostat said on Monday. Even though retail sales activity rebounded strongly due to the lockdown ease, it has still been lower by approximately 5% in comparison to the last year.

The drop was smaller than analysts had expected. In May the volume of retail trade increased by 38.4% for automotive fuels, by 34.5% for non-food products and by 2.2% for food, drinks and tobacco.

The highest increases were registered in Luxembourg (+28.6%), France (+25.6%) and Austria (+23.3%).
