Airbus poised to end A380 production - reports

Airbus SE is close to announcing that it will stop production of its A380 superjumbo ahead of schedule, the Financial Times reported on Thursday citing sources familiar with the matter.

The sources told the newspaper that representatives of Airbus and Emirates Airline were in talks on Wednesday night over the precise details of a potential decision. They added that Emirates was considering scaling its A380 order down from the current 53 to around 20 and taking a mixture of the more fuel-efficient twin-engine A330 and A350 airplanes as the remainder. However, they advised that although Airbus was expected to make a formal announcement on the matter together with its results later on Thursday, this was still subject to change.

The revelations came after Qantas's cancelation of its order for eight A380s last week left the future of the superjumbo's production program hanging in the balance. Emirates previously ordered 36 A380s and effectively saved the superjumbo from being axed at the eleventh hour.
