Alibaba's platform remains on US watchlist

The office of United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said on Thursday that it would boost "bilateral engagement" with 11 countries categorized as priority and another 25 on the regular watchlist for concerns regarding the protection of intellectual property. The so-called notorious markets list is for tracking reports of copyright piracy and counterfeited goods. China's largest ecommerce platform, run by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., was held on the list for infringing goods at its marketplace, the annual report adds.

The online sales system operator made progress with "some steps" but small and medium-sized enterprises have complained about the difficulty of getting identified bogus items banned. Alibaba promised to keep fighting together with rights holders. The company has said it initiated the arrest of 1,752 suspects and the shutdown of 1,282 production and distribution units, the document adds. Pirate Bay was also retained on the watchlist.

China was kept among the allegedly most ineffective states together with Algeria, Argentina, Chile, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine and Venezuela.
