Barnier: Irish backstop just insurance policy

European Union Chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said on Monday that the Irish backstop does not reflect the bloc's vision of the future relationship with the United Kingdom. He also acknowledged that British Prime Minister Theresa May has no intention to request an extension to Article 50.

"The Irish backstop is not EU's view of our future ties with Britain; it is just an insurance policy," Barnier said, addressing a press conference. The EU's chief Brexit negotiator reiterated once again that there will be no reopening of the agreement, adding that in order for the present deal to pass, "we need a clear and stable majority in the House of Commons."

Barnier is expected to meet UK's Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay later tonight from whom he expects to provide "clarity on the way forward."
