Blackford: SNP won't back motion to hold election

The opposition needs to unite, "stop the damaging Brexit" and "take the toxic government out of office," Ian Blackford said on Monday in Parliament. The Westminster leader of the Scottish National Party said the issue is "in the hands of the Labour Party" and called upon it to join the bloc which includes the Liberal Democrats. He revealed his group won't back the motion tabled by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to hold an early election.

SNP is, however, ready to "get people back their say" but it doesn't want to leave Johnson any more time than is needed to dissolve Parliament, Blackford asserted. He supported the Lib Dems' initiative to hold snap elections before Brexit can be executed.

The cabinet has proposed December 12 for the vote. The SNP's top lawmaker claimed the option would enable Johnson to rush the process and take the country out of the European Union by the end of November.
