China hopes US will not impose tariffs after talks

China's Commerce Ministry said on Thursday that its trade team is in "communication" with American counterparts and that mid-level negotiators are set to meet soon. High-level talks are also on the agenda, it added.

The ministry in Beijing welcomed US "goodwill" on trade, after President Donald Trump delayed the tariffs planned for October 1 by two weeks. It also expressed hope the duties will ultimately not be imposed after the next round of talks.

Chinese companies have begun to enquire about the prices of US agricultural products, the spokesperson for the ministry noted. In August, China stopped buying US farm goods as retaliation to the newest tariffs announced by Trump several days before.
