China slams Pompeo over Tiananmen comments

China's Embassy in the United States blasted US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday over the statement he made on the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests, claiming the remarks were full of "prejudice and arrogance."

"Under the pretext of human rights, the statement grossly intervenes in China's internal affairs, attacks its system, and smears its domestic and foreign policies," the embassy's spokesperson said in a statement. "This is an affront to the Chinese people and a serious violation of international law and basic norms governing international relations. The Chinese side expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to it," the statement added and insisted that human rights in the country are "in the best period ever."

On Monday, Pompeo accused China of abusing human rights "whenever it serves its interests" and claimed any hopes of a "more tolerant society" in the Asian country "dashed" since the Tiananmen Square events from 1989.
