China to sanction US lawmakers over Xinjiang

China's Foreign Ministry announced on Monday the country will impose sanctions on United States lawmakers who brought sanctions on Xinjiang officials over alleged human rights abuse of Uyghur Muslim minority in the region.

The sanctions have targeted numerous officials and entities in the US, including high-ranked Republican Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. Shortly after the US action, China revealed it would introduce reciprocal measures as a response while accusing the US of interfering in the country's internal affairs.

Commenting on the increasing tensions, US State Secretary Mike Pompeo recently claimed the Communist Party of China has "an enormous credibility problem" as it fears the country's citizens.
