Colonial Pipeline hackers 'not political'

The hackers behind the Colonial Pipeline attack, known as the DarkSide gang, claimed themselves not political, but rather ethical, donating proceeds to charities and only targeting for-profit companies in English-speaking countries, CNBC reported on Monday, citing a statement from the Cybereason representatives.

"We do not participate in geopolitics, do not need to tie us with a defined government and look for our motives. [...] Our goal is to make money, and not creating problems for society. From today we introduce moderation and check each company that our partners want to encrypt to avoid social consequences in the future," the DarkSide said in a statement.

The hacker group also posted its code of conduct, marking hospitals, schools, universities, NGOs and governmental agencies as protected entities. The gang stated it avoids attacking institutions based on former Soviet Union countries.
