Consumer confidence in Eurozone down in January

The economic sentiment among consumers and businesses in the Eurozone decreased further in January in comparison to the previous month, the European Commission revealed in its report released on Friday.

The Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) declined by 1.4 points to 111.6 in the European Union and by 1.1 to 112.7 in the Eurozone, but still, as the document noted, remained high overall. Meanwhile, the Employment Expectations Indicator (EEI) went down by 0.5 points to 113.1 in the EU and by 0.2 to 113.3 in the euro area.

The report linked the decline to a drop in, in the first place, services and construction, but also in industry and consumer confidence. On the other hand, confidence in retail trade improved.
