European Parliament backs potential Article 50 extension

The European Parliament voted in favor of granting an extension of Article 50 in case the United Kingdom submits such a request that would enable it to stay in the European Union beyond the current October 31 deadline date. MEPs backed the move with 544 votes in favor and 126 votes against the extension.

Earlier in the debate on the UK's departure from the EU, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker warned that a no-deal seems likely, but that a deal is still possible. European Parliament's chief Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt added that the Irish backstop guarantees peace on the island of Ireland.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has vowed to deliver Brexit on October 31, but a law Parliament passed before it was prorogued instructs Johnson to ask for a Brexit delay unless Parliament approves a no-deal Brexit or an altered deal.
