Federal prosecutors call for 'substantial' prison time for Cohen

Federal prosecutors called for "substantial term of imprisonment" for United States President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, despite him having cooperated with authorities.

The Southern District of New York called for a sentence of 51 to 63 months of jail time for Trump's ex-attorney, who pleaded guilty to lying to Congress last week. Additionally, Cohen pleaded guilty to eight criminal counts back in August, including tax fraud.

"While Cohen - as his own submission makes clear - already enjoyed a privileged life, his desire for even greater wealth and influence precipitated an extensive course of criminal conduct," prosecutors wrote. Although Cohen's cooperation "was ultimately credible and useful to its ongoing investigation," prosecutors noted that he "repeatedly declined to provide full information about the scope of any additional criminal conduct in which he may have engaged or had knowledge."
