Germany adds record 23,648 COVID cases, 260 deaths

The daily jump in new coronavirus cases in Germany was at its highest since the start of the pandemic, with 23,648 people testing positive for the virus during the day on Thursday, according to Robert Koch Institute's (RKI) tally.

The nation's total rises to 879,564 once the new infections are added, with the cumulative number of fatalities reaching 13,630 after health authorities attributed 260 more deaths to the virus in the twenty-four-hour time.

The country saw a rise in daily infections as of late, which prompted Chancellor Angela Merkel to impose new lockdown measures in order to limit the spread of the virus and avoid overwhelming hospitals.
