Germany refuses to renegotiate NI Protocol

Germany supports the European Union's efforts to find solutions to Northern Ireland Protocol issues, a government spokesperson said on Friday, stressing that Berlin refuses to renegotiate the entire protocol. According to previous reports, Germany also pushed for contingency plans if the United Kingdom decides to unilaterally suspend the protocol.

On Wednesday, the EU published proposals for changes to the protocol, scrapping 80% of border checks between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. However, it did not propose changes to the role of the European Court of Justice in the EU-UK relations, a point London insists on. Meanwhile, the UK will submit an amended version of the protocol, which is very likely to be rejected by Brussels.
