Greta Thunberg: EU climate law 'admits surrender'

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg said during a speech in Brussels on Wednesday that with the European Union's climate law and net-zero emissions by 2050 plans, the bloc is "indirectly admitting surrender" to respecting the Paris Agreement. She went on to say the EU is only "pretending" to be a leader on climate policy.

Speaking before the European Parliament, Thunberg slammed the law as "based on an insufficient CO2 budget" and added that it diminishes chances of lowering average global temperature growth to below 1.5 degrees Celsius "to less than 50%."

The activist, who is taking a year off school to focus on protesting climate change, noted that the EU needs climate goals for 2020 and not just for 2030 or 2050.
